Compact SUVs have rapidly become mainstay driveway additions of families and individuals around the U.S. The Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda CX-5 are two prime contenders that aim to meet and exceed your space, style, and performance needs. Which one does a better job?

Though the Mazda CX-5 has yet to hit dealership lots, with minimal changes predicted, we're confident the Hyundai Tucson has this one in the bag.

In the following review, you'll learn why the Hyundai Tucson makes a stronger case for small SUV seekers in Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties in comparison to the Mazda CX-5.

Tucson vs CX-5: Space

2017 Hyundai Tucson Interior

The Hyundai Tucson and the Mazda CX-5 both offer seating for five passengers across two rows. For compact SUVs, these models offer drivers and riders commendably generous inner dimensions with over 41 inches of legroom upfront, and reigning measurements in the back.

If you plan on using your SUV for both short and long drives, the Mazda CX-5's seats might not be the best fit. One test drive expert from Autotrader reported their "hindquarters [were left] numb and shoulder blades rubbed raw" after driving around in the top Grand Touring trim for a week, with a three-hour trip mixed in.

On the flip side, the Tucson has much praise to show for its supportive and comfortable seats that come standard in stain-resistant fabric. With what Forbes describes as "a near-perfect blend of comfort and lateral support," you can be sure that the Tucson's accommodations are road-trip ready. A reclining rear seat (unfortunately not offered on the CX-5) allots Tucson travelers even more room when needed.

Power Potential

Comparing their power sources and standard powertrain sets, the Hyundai Tucson beats out the Mazda CX-5's maximum output, 165 horsepower to 155 horsepower. The Mazda CX-5 comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and requires upgrading for the automatic version, while all base Hyundai Tucsons come with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy is very close with these two, and depending on the trim you choose, your returns could top a combined average of 28 mpg or more according to the EPA. Though competitive in this respect, with a larger gas tank (16.4-gallon capacity over the CX-5's 14.8-gallon capacity), Hyundai Tucson drivers traveling through Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties won't have to fill up as often as 2017 Mazda CX-5 owners.

Hyundai Tucson vs. Mazda CX-5: Safety

In safety crash tests administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which evaluate the vehicle's ability to withstand various crash or collision scenarios, the Hyundai Tucson earned exemplary scores across categories and brought home the highest overall score of a 5-Star Overall Rating.

Though its scores for the model, the Mazda CX-5 missed the NHTSA's 5-star mark in two out of three tests, earning a combined 4-Star Overall Rating. For safety-minded buyers, the added peace of mind provided by the Tucson's outstanding safety performance definitely gives it a leading edge.

Family runners might also be interested in the 2017 Hyundai Tucson's advanced driver-assist technology. It includes programs like Lane Keeping Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Assist to help you be more mindful while out on the road.
